    Ouachita National Forest

“OOOOk-lahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain…” Those famous lyrics are what come to the forefront of most people’s minds when they hear the name Oklahoma. The musical made the state popular in the 40’s, and since then people have been traveling to the Sooner state to check out what it has to offer. Oklahoma is more than just a plain state; they’ve got rolling hills, pine-forested mountains, and numerous crystal lakes all perfect for those looking for outdoor recreation.

The state’s only national forest, Ouachita National Forest boasts over 352,000 acres of diverse terrain, perfect for those outdoor enthusiasts.  There are numerous hiking and biking trails throughout the many state parks; horseback riding; hunting; fishing, kayaking and canoeing on the park’s creeks and lakes; you can even go hang-gliding. Also winding throughout the park are many miles of unpaved roads perfect for dirt-bikes and four wheel vehicles.

There are four campgrounds located inside the national forest: Billy Creek Campground, Cedar Lake Campground, Cedar Lake Equestrian Campground, and Winding Stair Campground. Cedar Lake campground is located around the lake and has 3 loops; north shore, south shore and Shady Lane. All range from primitive campsites to more modern campsites suited for RV’s.

Cedar Lake Equestrian campground is perfect if you want to bring your own horses to ride the over 1,000 miles of trails. All campsites feature picnic tables, fire pits, and centrally located bath/shower facilities.

Winding Stair Campground is located along the Talimena National Scenic Byway which takes you from the eastern part of the state to western Arkansas.  The campsites here offer a sense of peace and relaxation because most of their campsites are secluded from the main campgrounds.  You get to explore nature, sit under the stars, and listen to the sounds of the forest without the noise from other campgrounds.

Mother’s Day is a great weekend to get your family out and spend some quality time together with Mom.  There is plenty to do outdoors in the great state of Oklahoma so get your RV ready!
