Snowbird Destinations Within Driving Distance of Oklahoma City

Snowbird Destinations within Driving Distance of Oklahoma City

There are a lot of places one could travel to in the United States to get away for the season.  Oklahoma City is probably not one you would think of too often but there is plenty of fun and eventful things to see and do for a snowbird within driving distance to OKC.

Starting closest to the city, snowbirds can visit the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. You get the chance to see the history of the cowboy way, get a feel for Native American culture, and see ancient artifacts from the Wild West.  Get the first-hand experience of the days of John Wayne.

About an hour and a half away is the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks, OK.  You can get up close and personal with sea turtles and sting rays; electric eels and colorful fish of the coral reefs. If you are feeling extra adventurous you can partake in their “Sleep with the Sharks” event in January.  Join them for a fun night filled with activities, snacks and entertainment. Then sleep next to the ferocious predators of the sea.  For more information or to reserve your spot, visit http://www.okaquarium.org/events/sleep-with-the-sharks/.

For the avid fisherman, Lake Texoma is the perfect place to throw out a line.  A little over 2 hours away is the Texas/ Oklahoma border where Lake Texoma makes its home.  Running along the Red River in Texas and Oklahoma, this large body of water is a popular destination for bass, crappie, catfish and striper fishing.

If a relaxing game of golf is more your speed, you can play one of the state’s top golf courses at Chickasaw Point Golf Resort in Kingston, OK.  Also a little more than 2 hours from Oklahoma City, this golf course offers spectacular views of Lake Texoma.  With its rolling hills and Bermuda grass fairways this 72 par golf course offers a fun and challenging game for every level of golfer.

With all of these activities for snowbirds to enjoy, you’re going to need a place to relax.  The Oklahoma City East KOA is located just 15 miles outside the city center.  It’s close to the attractions of the city; museums, shops, sporting events.  The park has full hook-up, pull through sites with patios for RV’s of all sizes.  There is a K9 park for your furry friends, free Wi-Fi and a 1 mile nature trail if you feel like getting out and enjoying nature.  Campsites are available year round. For information on reservations, visit http://koa.com/campgrounds/oklahoma-city/.
